Covered Up At Work, Updates

Work has been crazy lately at my day job. Students have returned to campus, they all run around like chickens with heads cut off. None of them, nor their parents, read any of the instructions given to them. We’d like to blame this on poor communication on our part, because then we could fix it. But it’s simply not true. You can take a horse to water…

To compound frustrations, we had a major power outage in our data center on Friday that caused, well… everything… to break. As things came back online, we were still getting caused about various servers and applications that didn’t like being randomly turned off. We can blame this lovely event on a malfunction with the “kill switch” designed into the system for safety. I hope they have that worked out now.

This morning I came in to find out our old print server was having issues, and people were complaining it had been down since Friday. We do not have a notification system on the old print server that lets us know when it’s malfunctioning. The new one that’s been recently put in place to replace it definitely does though. I’ll be happy when that whole fiasco is over. Still, we only work 8am – 5pm Monday – Friday, so there’s no real way to contact IT over the weekend except for the student repair area or one of the lab assistants. There’s just not enough funding for the school to provide coverage much of any kind outside of those hours.

I’m on my fourth grad school class now, as of this past week. I got elected de-facto project manager for the week, since I’m supposedly most familiar with the project we’ve brought in from last semester. At least I still have two team members that I know from last semester. I’ve got to read 8 articles by tonight, and then lead a meeting to decide how we’re going to accomplish this week’s assignment. I will graduate at the end of the summer in 2010, next year. Just over half-way done!

Spent the weekend celebrating my friend Kendall’s birthday and hanging out with Theresa, my most recent lady person of significant interest. We watched Invader Zim and hung out at the house. I made hamburgers and polish sausage that Brad bought to share. It was a mighty big meal and there was plenty to go around. I was overheated from being in the kitchen and so I took a break, and hardly ate what I expected to eat. There are good leftovers though.

Mom and her husband Chris and my “bonus brother” (step-brother) Will are coming up this weekend to stay at my house. I’ve taken on another renter, George, so the house is going to be packed that weekend for sure. That’s it for personal updates.
